Motorcyclists: Do you understand the danger of left-turn accidents?

On Behalf of | Jun 11, 2021 | Personal Injury

Motorcycle accidents happen every day under many different circumstances. But they all have one thing in common — it is far more dangerous for the rider than it is for anyone in the passenger vehicles. Even a rider with proper safety gear who is following all traffic laws can be seriously injured or killed.

With this in mind, it’s important to consider how accidents happen and how they can be avoided. Today, we’ll take a look at left-turn crashes.

How they happen

In this example, the car is the one making the left turn The motorcyclist, moving toward the car, intends to go straight.

The problem is that the car has to cross through the motorcyclist’s lane to make that turn. This means that the success of the turn depends entirely on a judgment call. If the driver makes the wrong call, the motorcyclist T-bones the side of the car.

Drivers make mistakes for a few main reasons, e.g., thinking that they have more space than they do. A motorcycle’s small size can make it appear farther away. Another issue is when the driver is so used to  seeing other cars and trucks that they don’t notice the motorcycles even when they are riding along legally.

How can you keep motorcyclists safer?

Avoiding these accidents is hard and often impossible. You can’t always avoid another driver’s mistakes, even when you are careful and wary. If you get injured in an accident, you must understand what legal steps to take to seek proper compensation. It can help cover medical bills and many other costs you may face.
